The Mtitu Foundation was founded by Tracy McLachlan and Tito Kilale, to raise money for the people of Mtitu.

Tracy lives in Scotland and in August 2001 undertook a short period of voluntary service at the Mtera Secondary School in Tanzania. She subsequently sponsored one of the students at the school, Shangwe Simile, and Tracy and Shangwe became friends and corresponded for a number of years. In 2006 Shangwe visited Tracy in Scotland to improve her English and raise awareness of the needs of her home village of Mtitu.

Shangwe's uncle, Tito Kilale, is a remarkable man. A trained teacher and former headmaster, he has almost single-handedly taken it upon himself to found a secondary school in his home village (while studying for an MBA in his spare time!). Through Shangwe, Tracy and Tito joined forces to get the school built and ensure its permanent survival, and so the Mtitu Foundation was born. The Foundation now aims to raise money for several aspects of poverty relief in the village.
